OLEDs are making a room for themselves in the mainstream, developing high performance displays of tomorrow. OLEDs ably present more impressive images than what we currently see on the up-market plasmas and LCD displays, alongside their efficient potential. Latest innovation brought about using these Organic Light Emitting Diodes is in the packaging and printing industries. The ROLLED project under European researchers coordinated by VTT, has come about with a flexible OLED element capable of being produced using roll-to-roll printing technology.

What’s Innovative:
The element developed under the project is made in organic material, well fixed inside a moisture barrier film. The flexibility of the OLED element allows it to be used for attention-grabbing product packaging, and in posters and other such items. Measuring a good 200–250 micrometers thick, the new method promises to be cheaper than the traditional method, because OLEDs possess a potential to be developed in a continuous roll-to-roll processes.
